Major Companies Back New 24/7 Carbon-Free Initiative
Global corporates like Google, AstraZeneca, Iron Mountain Data Centers, Shree Cement, AirTrunk, and Vodafone UK have joined the Climate Group’s 24/7 Carbon-Free Coalition as Founding Partners. This new initiative aims to redefine corporate electricity procurement by matching energy consumption with local carbon-free power around the clock.
The 24/7 Carbon-Free Coalition, launching at Climate Week NYC, targets the decarbonization of corporate electricity usage. Members will work together to shape the campaign’s pilot phase, with a full rollout expected in 2025.
We are asking ambitious business leaders to go further to reduce carbon emissions by choosing to use carbon-free electricity 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” said Helen Clarkson, CEO, Climate Group. “By taking this step, the Coalition’s Founding Partners will accelerate the roll-out of new renewables, advance battery and carbon-free tech, and eliminate the need for ‘back-up’ fossil fuels.
Moving Toward Carbon-Free Grids
The Coalition’s objective is to show the benefits of 24/7 Carbon-Free Electricity (CFE) for businesses and the environment. By sourcing power from the local grid, companies can drive broader changes in the energy system and support policy engagement at the regional level.
“Innovative partnerships are key to making 24/7 CFE a reality for everyone, and we’re excited to work with other climate leaders on this important challenge,” said Kate Brandt, Chief Sustainability Officer, Google. “Together, we can accelerate decarbonization in this critical decade for climate action.”
Aligning Goals with Action
In 2022, the average Google facility matched 64% of its energy consumption with renewable power generated either on-site or on the local grid. The company aims to run on 24/7 carbon-free energy across all its operational grids by 2030.
“At AstraZeneca, we want to play a role in enabling the energy transition and demonstrate that 24/7 CFE is not only possible but brings many benefits,” said Liz Chatwin, Vice President, Global Sustainability, AstraZeneca.
Broader Impacts on the Industry
This initiative builds on the success of the Climate Group’s RE100, which unites over 400 of the world’s largest businesses in a shared commitment to source 100% renewable electricity. The new coalition takes the commitment a step further by pushing for real-time carbon-free energy matching on a local scale.
The Coalition is expected to drive innovation by leveraging diverse technologies—such as increased renewables, enhanced battery storage, and flexible tech solutions—to ensure carbon-free power when traditional renewables are unavailable.

Призыв к действию
The Climate Group is urging other companies to start their 24/7 CFE journey. “Businesses taking this ambitious step will not only work towards fully decarbonizing their own electricity consumption but also drive new solutions to transform electricity systems to run entirely on carbon-free electricity,” the coalition stated.
This move sets a precedent for other industries, highlighting the importance of proactive decarbonization to support energy security, economic competitiveness, and sustainable growth.
